Predator Neckwear?

Is there any cannon info about the neckwear on the Predator's? Kinda pointless topic but I've been real curious. My thoughts were either simply protection or some sort of connection to the plasma caster that when moving the Predator's neck, the caster followed.. As an explanation. Those are my thoughts, whats yours?
