Apparently, when Ripley went out with the first ship she left a daughter on earth who was about 8 or 10 years old or so. (Whether Dallas was the father or not, I don't know.) Anyway, what was left on the cutting room floor of Aliens was that when she found out she had been drifting around for 70 years or so, she asked about her daughter. But her daughter had died a year or two before she was rescued, hence, her bonding with Newt. Also, if you notice, one of the great dissolves in Aliens is her face into Mother Earth. This and other symbolic references to motherhood, strength, birth and survival makes Aliens one of my favorite movies.

Warrant officer (id number 36706)of the refinery tanker Nostromo, Ellen Ripley was woken by Mother in her return trip to Earth still in the boondocks, short of Zeta II Reticuli. An acoustic beacon was received by the ship at 32 seconds interval, probably an S.O.S., and the crew was bound to act as a rescue team or the company would retrieve their wages completely. After landing on Acheron, executive officer Kane was attacked by an alien life form that stuck on his face. Ripley, obeying the rules in case of possible contamination, was willing to leave him out, but science officer Ash opened the gate against her will. When they were about to enter the criogenic capsules, Kane started to convulse and his chest burst as a fast and deadly snake-like creature opened its way out. A new morphing took place while the crew was looking for the alien and trying to kill it, and the thing became an enormous killing machine, finishing captain Dallas and technician Brett. Finally, Ripley tried to question Mother -the main processor of the ship- about the alien and found out that the call was not an S.O.S., but a warning, and that Weyland Yutani had sent them to Acheron to collect the creature for them. Ripley was attacked then by Ash, who turned out to be a robot programmed to protect the alien, and almost killed if not for engineer Parker. Once defeated, Ash revealed the truth: the creature could not be killed. Ripley decided them to destroy the ship with the creature inside, escaping in a lifboat, but the monster still had time to kill Lambert -ship's navigator- and Brett and got inside the Narcissus. Ripley finally managed to throw it to space and got to sleep with her cat Jones.
When Ripley was found in space, 57 years had passed. Her daughter had died as an old woman, she was blamed for destroying the company's transport and fired, working in the docks lifting loads and what was worse: Aheron had been colonised. As communications with the colony were lost, the company decided to send a team of marines to found out what had happened and Ripley was invited to join them as adviser. First, she refused to go, but her nightmares were so horrible that she decided to in an attempt to exorcise them. During the trip, she did not make too many friends. Also, she found out that there was a robot aboard: Bishop. Due to her previous experience with Ash, she had developed an intense hate against syntetics, and warned Bishop not to come near her. However, as most marines entered the colony and found themselves in the reactor surrounded by cocooned victims and hissing aliens, she took control of the armored transport and entered. Although the marines had been warned against shooting their weapons inside the reactor and their clips had been removed, Vasquez had some clips hidden and shot the creatures, starting a core nuclear reaction that would burst Acheron to pieces in hours. The survivors gor out of the place only to discover that an alien had entered their landing vehicle, killing the pilot and crashing it on the ground.
Trapped inside the complex, the marines tried to control every entrance to the buildings, and Ripley discovered a child named Rebecca -a.k.a. Newt- that had survived the Havok and was almost in shock. The only way out of the planet was to use a radio link to bring a second transport down by remote control and Bishop offered himself to go for it, improving a bit Ripley's opinion about robots. Too bad her opinion about the company became even poorer as she discovered that Burt -the company's men down there- had been sent to pick an specimen of the aliens, passing the controls on earth by the easy procedure of infecting one of them and killing all the others disconnecting their criogenic capsules.
As hours passed, Newt told them that the creatures hunted at dark and her theory was confirmed when the sensors showed movement everywhere: though the gates were sealed, the aliens used the air conducts to move through the complex. Most marines died during the chase, except Hicks, who became a sort of a friend to Ripley, but unfortunately, during the run, Newt fell down to an area of the ship where Ripley could not get. As they were attacked again, Hick's face was burnt with molecular acid after shooting an alien, so she took him to the ship that Bishop had called indeed and returned to rescue Newt, whom she believed the beasts had kept alive to use as a host.
Ripley found Newt near the hive, where the Queen breeded the eggs containing the facehuggers. Apparently, the girl was not infected, but their escape put them in front of her majesty, and Ripley destroyed the whole hive, being pursued by the Queen who showed too much intelligence to be a simple an animal. Once in the Sulaco, Ripley discovered horrified as Bishop was impaled by the queen's tail that it had become an unexpected guest. Once again, she had to push it out to space to get rid of the beast, using a suit like the one she wore in the docks.

Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection

In following sequel, Ripley's ship crashed down in Fury 161, a prison planet. Newt criogenic chamber had suffered a malfunction and she had died and Hicks did not make it through the crash. Bishop was now a heap of circuitry. Unfortunately, the alien queen had managed to leave an egg in the ship, and the facehugger inside managed to infect a dog, breeding a new type of alien, faster than the previous ones ( It seems here for the first time that the aliens absorb part of their hosts' features). In a planet with no weapons and surrounded by hostile men who had seen no woman for years, Ripley had to look for a way too survive, until she found out that she was infected, and carried an alien herself. It seems that Newt was infected indeed and as her capsule collapsed, the almost developed creature got out of her and into Ripley's mouth to finish its incubation. How the creature opened a hole into Ripley's capsule without collapsing it or why the incubation period was so much longer than in previous ocassions remains unexplained. Aware of her future, Ripley tried her best to help the prisoners, but had no luck and they all died, being the moster killed by a dive in hot liquid metal. When she was the only survivor, a group of Weyland-Yutani appeared and offered themselves to conduct an operation to extract the creature from Ripley's body, saving her life, but realising that to provide the company with an alien could mean the end of the human race, she jumped into the liquid metal, carrying the creature with her into final oblivion ... or so she thought.
200 years later, after Weylan-Yutani had been bought by Wal-Mart and dissapeared, the U.S. army was developing a secret project in the ship Auriga, next to Pluton's orbit: working with the blood samples extracted from Ripley in Fiorina 161, they had managed to create a perfect clone named Ripley 8 with the alien inside, since she was examined after being infected (Here was pointed out for the first time that breeding an alien induces changes in hosts at a genetic level). They just waited until the creature was about to burst her breast and quirurgically extracted it in a controlled environment. Guided by curiosity, they sewn Ripley 8 again to watch her development. Ripley showed enormous dexterity and strength, plus a new ferocity and killer instinct she didn't had before. Part of the alien genes had been mixed with her own, becoming not totally human. She also had memories of her previous life due to her alien heritage: aliens are thelepathically linked and share a sort of residual memories. The alien inside her was a queen and it soon started to breed eggs. Wren and Gediman, scientists in charge of the project, had asked colonel Perez for human hosts for the facehuggers and he had ordered them to Elgyn, chief oroup of pirates that operated ilegally in space. They hijacked a transport of miners in her way to Xarem and sold their criogenic capsules to the man, being inmediatly infected.
The crew of the Betty decided to spent a few days in the Auriga to take some rest and to renovate their supplies, but their new member, a young girl named Annalee Call, had a secret agenda: somehow, she had discovered what the project was about and in a desperate attempt to save Earth was determined to kill Ripley. As she discovered that the alien queen had already been extracted, she found no reason to destroy the woman, but still offered herself to kill her and finish her nightmares. Ripley refused and sent her out, but Call was discovered by the soldiers and the Betty's crew blamed for spionage and treason.
While they fought the soldiers to save their lives, the aliens were escaping of their cells and killing everybody on board. The pirated tried to escape, but Elgyn was fooled and eaten by a creature that pursued the rest to a dead end. There, Ripley 8 opened her way through the creature bursting its head with a shot. Ripley wanted to save her escaping in the Betty, and the crew was willing to take her with them after seeing her in action, all but Call who suspected that her loyalties could change to her second species. Soldier DiStephano and scientist Wren also escaped with them.
While running through the Auriga corridors, Ripley discovered a door labelled '1-7' and inmediatly related it to the number tatooed in her arm. There she found out the previous 7 monstruous clones that were created before her. Specially cruel was what they had done to number 7, who had been opened alive and left aside unsewn, suffering in her deformity and begging for a quick death. Bursting into tears, Ripley burnt them all, leaving no tissue for further experiments in the room but controlling herself not to kill Wren, who was punched down by Call.
Later, Ripley would discover that Call was in fact a second generation robot -a syntethic created by robots- and asked her to destroy the ship, that following an emergency procedure was travelling straight to Earth. As the girl couldn't do it, she decided to make it collapse into earth to destroy its lethal crew. Ripley also developed a sort of affection for the tormented thing, protecting her in their way to the Betty, but when they were about to arrive, she felt the Queen's pain of breeding when they came close to the hive. As she stopped, the aliens captured her and took her to the hive, where she stared horrified at an altered birthing process, similar to the human one, that her genes had induced to the queen. Now, no host was needed, as a human-alien-like creatured was born. This creature seemed to be more close to Ripley than to the Queen, killing it and pursuing Ripley to the Betty. Once again, the ship was boarded by the monster (they are real experts when dealing with free trips), and this time, when the thing was about to tear Call apart, Ripley's divided loyalties finally favoured the human race: using her -slightly- acid blood, she opened a hole in one of the windows on the hull and the vacuum absorbed the newborn, who was literally transformed into pulp. Only Vriess, Johner, Call and Ripley made it to Earth.

Alien: The Nostromo Series
While the films took a different direction, the Nostromo series started with an adolescent Newt with psychic problems and a drunker, problematic Hicks with a deformed face. Ripley was lost with no trace behind, her criogenic capsule empty when they arrived to Earth. A new alien had been found in a ship and was breeding in a -supposedly- controlled environment, but a mad fanatic named Savage had started a cult being its main icon an alien warrior. As their minors entered the secret facilities where the experiment was taking place, most of them were shot down, but many got infected and everything went out of control. Finally, Earth was dominated by aliens and only a few managed to escape alive. Hicks was in a mission in the world of origin of the aliens and Newt had secretly come aboard with him, being safe by the moment. However, as they got to the last human resort, they found out to their horror that the army had carried some specimens with them in an attempt to use them to attack the other by a domestication process. Naturally, as soon as the aliens came down to Earth, they turned against their pretended masters and joined their 'family'. When all hope seemed to be lost, Ripley made her appearance.
At first, Newt was mad at her for leaving her alone, but Ripley told her how their cargo was boarded before arriving to earth and she was ordered to leave them, once again as a counsellor in alien matters. If she refused, Hicks and Newt would be waken and used in her place, so she had to leave in order to protect them. Ripley was planning a master 'coup de grace' against the aliens: she kidnapped the Queen and made it call its children and when they were together, burst them out with bombs. Finally, Ripley destroyed the queen herself. Unfortunately, they had been used by another alien being to erradicate the alien race on earth. This creature wanted the earth for itself, but they left Earth and went into space as survivors.

NOTE: Ellen Ripley was played in the four films by Sigourney Weaver
