I think you're referring to the Space Jockey from the original Alien, which was discovered by Dallas, Lambert, & Kane in the derelect spacecraft on Lv-426. There are many theories on them, some even believe that they created the Aliens, although I personally disagree with this.

Space Jockeys were hunted by Predators, They collected aliens and held them in their ship to protect them selfs against predators.

Aliens got loose and killed all the space jockeys, Chestburster busted the jockey and wrecked the ship.

Aliens got loose on LV426,
