I just always thought of it like a bee hive, here are my thoughts:

In a bee hive there are certain bees that strictly work only inside the hive (This could be the Aliens that attacked the marines) and there are bees that collect pollen (Pollen being the colonist, and these types of bees would be the Aliens that went out to collect hosts). Also in a bee hive, if the intruder proceeds further into the hive than the main priority is to protect the Queen.

Now instead of being exactly like a bee hive, there could be some different things. For instance, instead of there being pollen collectors (Host collectors) and hive workers (Aliens that cocoon and guard the hive) there may be only one mind set, like all the Aliens just do there own thing (Eat, sleep, collect hosts) but in the back of their minds they all know to instinctually protect the hive because that's their number one priority (And of course the Queen can give them commands).

Do you agree with one more than the other, or none of them at all, if so what is your opinion.
